Chermaine Amaya is a Filipina American and first-generation transfer student graduating with a degree in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology. Her educational journey was a non-traditional one, as she has worked ten years to receive her Bachelor’s degree. Throughout those challenging years, she was tested in her academic, work, and personal lives — but she persevered. She knew she could accomplish this, she believed in herself, and she succeeded. When years of her untreated mental illness were diagnosed, she began a journey towards her personal healing and wanted to extend that to others. During her time at UCR, she co-founded the Loving our Emotions as Asian-Pacific Islanders (LEAP!) organization to create a space to discuss mental health. She also participated in the Riverside X Dance (RXD) KPOP dance cover group and Filipinos in Health Sciences (FIHS) organization. Since her early childhood she has loved sharing her passion for singing with the community, and is grateful for the opportunity today to sing at such a celebratory occasion for so many, including herself. She deeply values all those who were there for her on this journey: the mentors, the many friends with whom she’s made cherished memories, and the family who always supported her. Chermaine will go on to begin a career in Phlebotomy while completing a post-baccalaureate program to become a clinical lab scientist.
